CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT THIS ONE? (Song starts at ~4:20, Grantaire’s verse ~4:51)

A ton of the feels, as I’m sure people have experienced, comes from Enjolras’ reaction to Grantaire’s verse, and performances vary in levels of How In Love Are They Honestly, but guh, this performance.It’s COMPLETELY different. The mocking way he starts, the angry way he confronts his fellow students (and the angry way they react too), and LISTEN TO HOW BROKEN HE SOUNDS AS HE SINGS DIRECTLY AT ENJOLRAS I CAN’T

THAT IS THE VOICE OF A MAN WHOSE WORLD IS SHATTERING BECAUSE HE KNOWS HE’S GOING TO LOSE THE ONLY THING HE CARES ABOUT. AND HE JUST TURNS AND WALKS AWAY BECAUSE HE CAN’T BEAR IT.

AND THEN ENJOLRAS’ REACTION IS SO PAINFULLY CANON IT HURTS BECAUSE HE DOESN’T GO AFTER HIM AND HE KEEPS THE OTHERS FROM GOING AFTER HIM TOO AND IT’S UNBEARABLY PERFECT BECAUSE IT SHOWS THE DISDAIN HE HOLDS FOR GRANTAIRE UNTIL THE VERY END, NEED I REMIND YOU: “INCAPABLE OF BELIEVING, OF THINKING, OF WILLING, OF LIVING, AND OF DYING.”

I’m trying to find it in myself to forgive whoever filmed this because why did you move the camera away before the hand-holding? Also, I’d like to point out that as Marius starts to sing, “LIFE WITHOUT COSETTE MEANS NOTHING AT AAALLL~”, Grantaire gives him a little pat on the knee before he leaves. He knows that feel, Marius. He definitely knows that feel.

Grantaire literally sings to Enjolras on his knees, Jesus fucking Christ, and if Feuilly hadn’t run in there, I swear he was about to grab him around the waist and cling to him. This one pretty much breaks the scale in terms of How In Love Are They Honestly levels. I mean, Enjolras GETS DOWN TO COMFORT HIM. AND THEN THE HUG. IT’S PRETTY MUCH BEYOND WORDS.

Also, Marius in the last two performances. Seriously, Grantaire is having an emotional breakdown here. NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR LONELY SOUL, PONTMERCY.

In the second video, I noticed Feuilly pours Joly a cup of wine before the jug gets passed around. That’s a neat bit of character acting, there.

Third video I can’t tell for sure because the camera pans to follow Enjolras, but it seems like Marius might be comforting Grantaire after his verse. With the way it’s staged, Grantaire and Enjolras’ interaction may well be what reminded him.

In the last video, it will forever amuse me the way Prouvaire slips away apparently to give Enjolras and Grantaire a bit of privacy.

Now let’s not be too hard on Marius. He’s just had a friend die in his arms, he’s about to die himself, and he never even got to say goodbye to the love of his life. We’ve spent this whole post practically writing poetry to Grantaire’s lonely soul, it would be uncharitable to mock Marius.

I thought you might find it interesting because hot damn, the role reversal. And Gavrouche gets involved, to great effect. The lyrics are pretty much the same, but he asks them why they want to die, rather than if they fear it.

Yet another horribly painful version of Drink With Me (en español this time). What kills me about this one is the interaction between Enjolras and Gavroche.

Enjolras goes in to hug Grantaire, but Grantaire avoids it and walks away, looking pained. Gavroche(who is very close to Grantaire in the musical). approaches Enjolras and looks up at him. I get the feeling it’s a bit accusatory, but I can’t see his face. Enjolras just looks shattered and guilty and nods his head towards Grantaire, as if to say “Please go help him, because I don’t know how to.”

The camera doesn’t follow Gavroche, so we don’t see what he does, but when I saw the US tour recently he went over and hugged Grantaire at this point, so I suspect that happened.
